Cardlike Upgrades and Stamps: Choosing Effects for Core Cards
Upgrades define how a Playing Card scores or behaves while held; Stamps add another trigger. Match the timing of the effect to the card’s actual role instead of simply placing the rarest effect on the most common card.
1. Scoring cards and held cards
- Scoring cards favor Fragile, Rock, Paperback, Multicard, Chipped, Replay Stamp, and Cash Stamp.
- Held cards favor Wooden, Gilded, and situational Fruit Stamp.
- Suit tools favor Plaid for flexible Flush construction.
Playing a Wooden core card forfeits its held ×1.5 Mult. Treating Rock as a ranked card ignores that it has no rank or base Chip value.
2. Roles of the nine Upgrades
| Upgrade | Core effect | Recommended role |
|---|---|---|
| Default | No extra effect | Ordinary card awaiting conversion |
| Gilded | $3 at round end while held | A card that is easy to keep unplayed |
| Fragile | ×2 when scored, 25% chance to break | Renewable burst card |
| Wooden | ×1.5 while held during scoring | Held support for High Card or Pair |
| Rock | +100 Chips, no rank | Reliable Chips without rank dependence |
| Paperback | Chance for Mult or money | Frequently scored or retriggered card |
| Plaid | Matches any suit when scored | Key-rank card in a Flush build |
| Multicard | +4 Mult when scored | Frequent scoring core |
| Chipped | +30 Chips when scored | Core card in a Chip-starved build |
See the complete rules and art in the Upgrade encyclopedia.
3. Roles of the four Stamps
| Stamp | Trigger | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| Replay | Scores an extra time | Amplify scoring Upgrades and rank Jokers |
| Fruit | Held on the final hand | Generate Fruit Cards for a fixed hand |
| Game | Discarded | Feed deck-editing resources |
| Cash | Scored | Add economy to a frequent scoring card |
CONTROL, CAPITAL, OPTION, and PLUS add these Stamps respectively. Prepare the target card before using them.
4. High-value Replay targets
Replay Stamp is more than another base score. It is strongest on Chipped or Multicard cores, 6s/7s in a SIX SEVEN build, scored Fragile or Paperback cards, and cards supported by several rank, suit, or face-card Jokers.
Retriggering can repeat both rewards and risks. Fragile gains more burst but may also face another break check.
5. Count-based Joker interactions
- 16 Bit Joker requires at least 16 upgraded cards.
- Fragile Joker converts Fragile breaks into permanent scaling.
- Wood Joker scales with Wooden count and rewards holding those cards.
- Vacuum removes Upgrades from scoring cards and conflicts with Upgrade-count plans.
6. Build before copying
Concentrate rare Upgrades and Stamps on one template, then copy it with Mage or COMMAND. Check its rank, suit, Upgrade, and Stamp before copying so its flaws are not duplicated too.
7. Common mistakes
- Playing every Wooden card and losing held effects.
- Relying on a single Fragile core that can disappear.
- Putting Replay or Cash Stamp on a card that rarely scores.
- Planning Fruit or Game Stamp generation without consumable space.
- Bloated decks created solely to reach 16 Upgrades.
- Ignoring Boss restrictions on scoring, held cards, or Jokers.
Every core card should answer three questions: when is it drawn, does it score, and does it remain in the deck afterward?
