Cardlike Deck Thinning: The Right Order for Copying, Deleting, and Upgrading
Deck thinning is not simply making the deck smaller. The goal is to make every draw more likely to support the hand you actually want. A focused 35-card deck can be more consistent than a directionless 25-card deck.
1. Define what stays
Before deleting, choose at least one direction:
- A core rank, such as 6, 7, or 9.
- A core suit for a Flush build.
- A core hand such as Pair, Three of a Kind, Straight, or High Card.
- A core Upgrade such as Wooden, Fragile, or Gilded.
Deleting too early can remove cards that a later build-defining Joker would have used.
2. A reliable editing order
- Choose the scoring core. Decide on rank, suit, or poker hand.
- Convert low-value cards. Turn bad cards into good cards before destroying them.
- Delete what remains irrelevant. Raise the density of core cards.
- Align suits when needed. Invest only for Flush or suit-based effects.
- Add Upgrades and Stamps. Concentrate rare resources on frequently scored or held cards.
Conversion before deletion usually preserves deck size while reducing the risk of destroying something useful.
3. Precise Game Card tools
| Card | Function | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Mage | Turns the left card into a copy of the right | Copy rank, suit, and Upgrade together |
| Blade | Deletes up to two selected cards | Precisely remove irrelevant cards |
| Prayer | Raises up to two selected ranks by one | Turn 5 into 6, 8 into 9, and similar edits |
| Soul/Luck/Malice/Greed | Convert up to three cards to a suit | Flush and suit-Joker builds |
| Vision/Earth/Flame | Create Fragile, Rock, or Wooden | Upgrade-count and dedicated Joker builds |
| Pearl/Blind/Grace | Upgrade up to two cards | Raise Upgrade density quickly |
See every effect in the Game Card encyclopedia. Mage is especially valuable because it improves a bad card without increasing deck size.
4. Admin Cards: high efficiency, high variance
Admin Cards can alter many cards at once:
- COMMAND: creates two copies of a selected card; best after preparing a perfect template.
- ESCAPE / FUNCTION / ONE: destroy a random card and add several upgraded cards, gaining density at the cost of deck size.
- DELETE: destroys five random cards and grants $20; efficient but capable of hitting core cards.
- SLASH / HOME: reshape hand ranks or suits and should be used only after checking their costs.
Random destruction becomes more dangerous when the deck contains only a few irreplaceable cards.
5. Build the template before copying
An ideal copy target combines:
- The main rank;
- The needed suit;
- A useful Upgrade;
- A valuable Stamp;
- Properties that do not conflict with the main hand.
Preparing one card first lets Mage or COMMAND complete several deck-building objectives per copy.
6. More core cards do not always mean more consistency
After adding copies, recalculate:
- Did the core-card percentage rise?
- Is the main hand easier to assemble?
- Did the copy introduce conflicting properties?
- Is there a backup if a boss disables the main rank?
7. Completion checklist
- Most draws advance the main poker hand
- Irrelevant ranks and suits are substantially reduced
- Several copies exist; the build does not rely on one card
- Upgrades and Stamps are on cards that actually score or remain held
- A backup hand remains available for Boss restrictions
- Random destruction is no longer used solely to make the deck smaller
After editing the deck, continue with the Upgrades and Stamps guide.
