Cardlike Boss Blind Guide: Pre-Round Checks and Backup Plans
Boss Blinds are dangerous because they attack a build’s most concentrated dependency, not merely because their score target is higher. Preparation means knowing how the build scores if its primary plan fails.
1. Five pre-Boss checks
- Hand restrictions: Are hand count, played-card count, or score target changed?
- Card restrictions: Are core ranks, face cards, or previously played cards disabled?
- Discard and draw: Can you still use discards to assemble the hand?
- Economy restrictions: Does playing cost money or reset savings?
- Joker restrictions: Can the remaining build score if the main Joker is disabled?
Read the effect before entering. The complete categorized list is in the Boss Blind encyclopedia.
2. Representative counters
| Boss | Restriction | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| The Nerf | Only one hand | Save the best hand and consumables; avoid one-point probability plans |
| The Flood | Must play five cards | Use Straight, Flush, Full House, or safe filler cards |
| The Bind | Face cards disabled | Keep numbered cards, Aces, or rank-independent Jokers |
| The Prison | Cards played earlier this Ante disabled | Preserve unused core cards and avoid over-thinning |
| The Garden | Discards two unplayed cards after a hand | Play irreplaceable cards first and keep held-card redundancy |
| The Hacker | Most-used hand resets money | Spend important money first and use a secondary hand |
| The Tax | $1 per played card | Save money and favor low-card, high-score hands |
| Card Cut | Random Joker disabled each hand | Spread Chips, additive Mult, and X-Mult across sources |
| Tycoon Troll | Score target ×3 | Save burst resources and verify both base score and X-Mult |
3. Why a backup hand matters
A backup does not need the same level as the main hand. It only needs to reuse the existing deck and Jokers. Flush decks often retain Pair or High Card; rank-focused decks can preserve several distinct copies for The Prison.
A useful backup should reuse current Jokers, use already upgraded cards, share part of the scoring engine, and clear within one or two hands.
4. When to save consumables
If ordinary rounds are safe, preserve resources such as the main hand’s Fruit Card, Mage or COMMAND for a critical copy, Vision or Flame for burst Upgrades, UPDATE for broad hand levels, or rank/suit editing that can repair a Boss hand.
Do not fill every consumable slot with vague future value. A counter only matters if it can be used in time.
5. When to reroll the Boss
Wet Floor and Fire Extinguisher let you pay $10 to reroll a Boss. Reroll when the Boss disables the build’s only engine, no backup rank/suit/hand exists, temporary repairs cost more than $10, and the payment will not destroy next-round purchasing power.
If the build still functions and only the target is higher, preserving the money and fighting is often better.
6. Final checklist
- The effect and trigger timing are understood
- The main hand is not directly disabled
- At least one backup scoring plan exists
- Key consumables have space and can be used before scoring
- Economy restrictions will not unexpectedly zero money
- Base Chips and Mult survive a disabled core Joker
- Boss-reroll money is available if the risk is unacceptable
Boss rounds reward the ability to identify a failure mode early and leave the build an exit.
