Cardlike Beginner Guide: Every Joker and Mechanic Explained for Balatro Players
Cardlike is a Roblox-based roguelike deckbuilder whose core gameplay is nearly identical to Balatro — but it has its own original card art, renamed cards, and unique interaction logic.
This guide helps you quickly map Balatro concepts onto Cardlike so the different names don’t trip you up.
1. The Four Pack Types
Cardlike’s packs map one-to-one onto Balatro’s, just with different names:
| Cardlike pack | Balatro counterpart | Contents |
|---|---|---|
| Fool Pack | Buffoon Pack | Jokers |
| Game Pack | Arcana Pack | Tarot-like cards (suit conversion, deletion, copying, etc.) |
| Deck Pack | Standard Pack | Playing cards (choose suit, rank, special effects) |
| Admin Pack | Spectral Pack | Spectral-like cards (advanced effects: copy, delete, transform) |
The shop also sells individual cards directly — unlike Balatro, where you must open packs. See the Pack encyclopedia.
2. Joker Name Counterpart Table
Cardlike’s Jokers are basically renamed Balatro Jokers with brand-new art. Known counterparts:
| Cardlike Joker | Balatro counterpart | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Wood Joker | Steel Joker | +0.2× Mult for each Wood card in your deck |
| Friendly Face | Smiley Face | Played face cards give +30 Chips |
| Rich Joker | Greedy Joker | Played Diamond cards give +3 Mult |
| Straight Edge | Runner | Levels up Straights |
| Modern Art | Abstract Joker | Scales with the number of Jokers you have |
| Blocky Joker | Square Joker | Similar to Square Joker |
| Double Joker (legacy name: Mad Joker) | Mad Joker | Two Pair gives +10 Mult when scored |
| Nerdy Joker (legacy name: Dirty Joker) | Scholar | Played Aces give +4 Mult and +20 Chips |
| Joyful Joker | Jolly Joker | Face-card-related |
| 6-7 Joker | — | 6s and 7s have a 67% chance to give ×2 Mult — extremely strong |
Full list in the Joker encyclopedia.
3. Card Editions
| Cardlike edition | Balatro counterpart | Visual |
|---|---|---|
| Wood | Steel | Woodgrain face |
| Fragile | Glass | Cracked face |
| Gilded | Gold Seal | Golden border |
| Holographic | Foil | Holographic shine |
| Lucky | Lucky | Lucky card |
4. Core Mechanic Differences
Correction: early reference material also mixed in Scratch and Nintendo DS versions of Balatro. An earlier draft incorrectly attributed their no-reordering, double-click selling, and Half Joker + Stencil behavior to Cardlike; those claims have been removed.
4.1 Planet cards = Fruit Cards
Balatro’s Planet cards (which level up hand types) are Fruit Cards in Cardlike — same function, $6 each. Some Jokers track how many Fruit Cards you’ve used (e.g. “+0.1 Chips per Fruit Card used”). See the Fruit Card encyclopedia.
4.2 Boss Blind differences
Some modes have no Boss Blinds — just ever-increasing Huge Blinds. Standard mode keeps bosses, including one that forces you to play 5 cards. See the boss guide.
4.3 Game speed
Cardlike supports 1x–4x game speed, great for speeding through repeat rounds.
5. Economy & Shop
- Base income each round comes from “per hand played” and “per Joker owned” bonuses
- The shop only has 2 Joker slots (fewer than Balatro)
- You can skip packs and buy individual cards (in certain modes)
- Reroll is available, but mind the cost
6. Recommended Builds
Current-version early-game ideas
- Ace route: Nerdy Joker gives each played Ace +4 Mult and +20 Chips when scored.
- Straight route: Straight Joker adds +12 Mult, while Straight Edge supplies more Chips.
- Economy route: Gilded Joker pays $4 at end of round; Conveyor Belt pays another $4 when you play its selected hand type.
High Card build
- Jokers: Friendly Face + Rich Joker + Joyful Joker
- Combines face cards and Diamond cards
- A single High Card can score 3,000+
7. Key Tips
- Don’t select the card you want deleted — Delete Card removes a different random card, not the selected one
- Emperor gives you two Game Packs — two free Tarot cards
- Save your economy — avoid spending everything early; keep $25 for interest
- Wood cards are always good — 0.2× Mult each stacks terrifyingly
- Build from current descriptions — legacy names and effects may have changed between versions
- Watch your Joker slot cap — new Jokers can’t be placed without free slots
8. Known Issues (current version)
- Some Boss Blinds are just numbered Huge Blinds with no unique mechanics
- Some animations (mult sounds, chip sounds) occasionally desync
- A few Joker descriptions are unclear
- Multiplayer has noticeable connection and resolution issues
